Stiftelsens ändamål är att skapa ett institut för musikvetenskaplig undervisning och forskning. Till förverkligande härav skall stiftelsen ordna kurser och föreläsningar i musikvetenskapliga ämnen, – ett arkiv, upptagande dels kompositörers eller andra inom musiken verksamma konstnärers egenhändiga musikmanuskript, brev och andra handlingar, dels olika slags inom musikkriften förekommande nedteckningar i handskrift och i tryck, såväl i originalupplagor som i andra editioner, – ett bibliotek av noter, läroböcker och annan musiklitteratur, – ett museum av gamla, ur bruk komna musikinstrument från skilda länder och tider, av tavlor, skulpturer, gravyrer, medaljer och andra konstföremål med bilder av musikens mästare eller med musiken såsomkonstmotiv, samt av föremål som tillhört eller använts av kända inom musiken verksamma personligheter.
